The American League expansion team for Los Angeles is awarded to Gene Autry and former football player Bob Reynolds. Autry, an actor, singer, movie cowboy and owner of Golden West Broadcasters originally just wanted the rights to broadcast the new team’s games. But when it became clear Dodgers owner would not sign off on any team owned by Hank Greenburg and Bill Veeck – the early frontrunners for the new L.A. franchise – Autry was persuaded to put in a bid for the team. Autry named the team the Los Angeles Angels after a California League team that played there in 1892. The team would later become known as the California Angels, the Anaheim Angels and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
